Nicole Cutler, L.Ac. asked:

With the summer season in full swing, it is likely that you will want to spend time outdoors enjoying the nice weather. For most people, throwing on some sunscreen before heading outdoors would be your only concern, but for those who suffer from Hepatitis C, photosensitivity (increased risk of burning from the sun’s rays) is all too common. Having Hepatitis C and being exposed to sunlight can be a very difficult thing to contend with, as some medications can cause an increased risk – resulting in hives or rashes – as well as put you at a much higher risk for sunburn. While these are all valid reasons to be cautious, it is also important to realize that sun exposure can actually help you.

Much of the research that has been done on people with chronic liver disease as well as those with chronic Hepatitis C has shown that their bodies lack the proper amount of vitamin D needed. Vitamin D is important because it aids in the absorption of calcium, which is essential for normal development of healthy teeth and bones. And it also helps your body to keep healthy levels of the minerals calcium and phosphorus in the blood.

Your body’s unique ability to produce vitamin D naturally from sunlight exposure is a tool that you can use as another way to keep your body healthy. There are numerous medications, both prescriptions as well as over the counter, that can cause an increased risk of burning when exposed to the sun. However, you should know that there are precautions you can take that will allow you to get the sun your body needs without causing additional harm.

Getting just a few minutes of sun per day while protecting yourself will help you feel better and is beneficial for your long-term health. Learn more on how to protect yourself from the sun.

Robert Baird asked:

What do most People Call this Condition?

Viral enteritis, intestinal flu, traveler’s diarrhea, food poisoning

What is this Condition?

Gastroenteritis is a severe stomach upset marked by diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramping. It affects people of all ages and is a major health threat in underdeveloped nations. In North America, gastroenteritis ranks second to the common cold as a cause of lost work time and fifth as the cause of death among young children. It can be life-threatening in elderly people and those weakened by other conditions. Most adults, however, recover without incident.

What Causes it?

Gastroenteritis has many possible causes, including acute food poisoning by bacteria, such as Salmonella, Clostridium botulinum, and Escherichia coli; amoebae and other parasites; viruses; swallowed toxins (such as plant parts or toadstools); drug reactions (antibiotics); enzyme deficiencies; and food allergies.

What are its Symptoms?

Reactions can be mild or severe, depending on the strength of the toxin and how far it spreads. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. Other possible symptoms include fever, general discomfort, and rumbling bowels.

How is it Diagnosed?

The doctor will ask about symptoms or order a lab exam of stool or blood samples for bacteria or parasites that cause gastroenteritis.

How is it Treated?

The doctor will advise rest and an increase in fluids. For a child, older person, or someone in poor health, the doctor may recommend hospitalization and prescribe an antiemetic, specific antibiotics, and intravenous replacement of fluids and electrolytes.

What can a Person with Gastroenteritis do?

Follow medication directions carefully to get maximum relief from your symptoms (for example, take antiemetics 30 to 60 minutes before meals, to avoid vomiting).

If you can eat, replace lost fluids and electrolytes with broth, gingerale, and lemonade.

Vary your diet to make it more enjoyable, but avoid milk and milk products, which may start the infection over again.

Take precautions when traveling and preparing food to prevent another bout of illness.

Ray Lengel asked:

Vaccinations protect the body against common infectious diseases. They are used to prevent disease, decrease the severity of disease and decrease death. Most immunizations are given during the developmental years but there are some immunizations that are given to adults, especially older adults. Important vaccinations in older adults include the influenza vaccine, pneumococcal vaccine, tetanus/diphtheria vaccine and the shingles vaccine.

Adults are candidates for other vaccinations. This includes immunization against hepatitis A & B. Hepatitis A immunization may be needed in those with diseases of the blood or liver, those who travel to areas that have high rates of hepatitis A or those who have sex with more than one person.

Hepatitis B immunization may be needed in the older adult who is receiving hemodialysis, those who are exposed to blood products, inject drugs intravenously, and those who have sex with more than one partner or those with a sexual transmitted disease.

Immunization against Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR) may be needed in people born after 1957 that have not had 2 immunizations with MMR or documented immunity to the diseases.

Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td) booster should be given every 10 years. Tetanus is a bacterium that enters the skin and affects the central nervous system resulting in difficulty swallowing, drooling, fever, irritability, convulsions, respiratory or cardiac arrest and death. Diphtheria, a respiratory disease that is spread by coughing or sneezing, can be fatal. This immunization reduces the incidence of these two potentially fatal diseases.

Individuals who have never had a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) are a candidate for a one-time dose of this vaccination in place of the Td. The main difference between the Td and the Tdap is the addition of the pertussis part of the vaccination. Pertussis is the bacterium responsible for whooping cough.

Influenza vaccines decrease death rates and hospitalizations during flu season. They should be given every year in the fall. Influenza or flu can be deadly in the older population and immunization is recommended in patients over the age of 50 or those with chronic diseases such as heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease and diabetes. Chronic diseases that increase risk of death when inflicted with influenza include chronic lung disease, heart disease and diabetes. It should not be given to individual who are allergic to eggs or egg products.

The pneumococcal vaccine should be given to everyone over the age of 65. It should also be given (after the age of 65) to anyone who had the vaccine more than five years before turning 65. It should also be administered to patients with diabetes, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), those without a spleen, or those afflicted with chronic lung, kidney, heart or liver disease.

The most recently developed vaccine that is recommended for the older adult is the shingles vaccine. It is recommended to be given at the age of 60.

Vaccinations are critically important in staving off disease. In today’s health care environment, many people are not up to date on their vaccinations. For more information on vaccinations visit

Julian Slowe asked:

Not many of us know about something that is common between Evil Kenivel and Naomi judd along with thousands of other lesser, known mortals. Well the answer is Hepatitis. Both stars have or had the virus, in particular the hepatitis c. there are basically three types that infect people every year. However in order to reduce the risk, it’s important to understand the causes and effects of this virus n body.

It’s a very easily spread virus which causes inflammation of the liver. The infection might be acute, with the body recovering in less then six months. Or it might be chronic, which means the virus lasts in the body for about six months or even more.

Different types of Hepatitis are caused by different types of viruses. All of these respond to medication and treatment differently. Although the infection is usually preventable and most who acquire usually recover, yet it is a major health concern. Mostly it’s considered dangerous because of the damage it may cause to a persons liver tissue and the ease with which it spreads from one to another.

It may seriously affect the immunity of the body and damage the liver even causing liver failure, cancer and even death.

Most important is to realize that one form of hepatitis is different from another. While hepatitis A spreads by contaminated food or water, but on the other hand C is spread only through body fluids or during birth.

Just like the causes, their treatment is equally different.

Although, all the forms of Hepatitis have different symptoms, differentiating one from the other, yet for the most part they have similar symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention. To begin with get it tested, so that treatment may begin if required.

Although not all types have the same symptoms yet they do share some common symptoms like dark urine, yellow skin or eye whites, also referred to as jaundice, low grade fever, loss of appetite and feeling sick. Loss of nutrition might also be caused by the virus.

Other more unique symptoms are stomachaches for those with B and C only. Yellow or pale colored stool affects those with hepatitis a and c, aching joints is more common for the patients with hepatitis B.

Because of the similarity in symptoms, self-diagnosis of the type is not easy and hence medical tests are required. However knowing the symptoms helps, as Hepatitis a has no real treatment and has to be waited out and thus one must know the usual symptoms, deviation from which is a sign of a different infection.

Prognosis in case of Hepatitis is vitally important. Most people with infection do recover in six months or so, yet in some cases it may take a longer time.

Amongst the various things that a person with infection and wishing speedy recovery should do, is to avoid alcohol. Alcohol and drugs add excessive burden to the already weak liver, trying to heal itself from the virus.

Regular visits to the doctor, monitoring the functioning of liver are equally important. Patients have a vital role in recovery and hence an open relationship with the doctor is extremely important and any new symptoms should be immediately expressed

Amit Kothiyal asked:

Hepatitis is one of the prominent health problems. Many illnesses and conditions can cause inflammation of the liver, for example, autoimmune Hepatitis. Hepatitis is most often viral, due to infection with one of the hepatitis viruses (A, B, C, D, and E) or another virus (such as those that cause infectious mononucleosis, cytomegalovirus disease, or yellow fever). The main non viral causes of hepatitis are alcohol and drugs.

Hepatitis B virus: is a rigorous disease caused by a virus that harms the liver .It is commonly known as hepatitis B virus (HBV).It also called as serum hepatitis. It can cause a wide number of symptoms ranging from general malaise to lifelong infection, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. HBV spreads by contaminated body fluids, such as blood, saliva, semen, vaginal fluids, tears, and urine, an infected blood transfusion, shared infected needles or syringes for injecting drugs, sexual activity with an HBV-infected individual, and transmission from HBV-infected mothers to their newborn infants.

Hepatitis C virus: is one of the common liver disease caused by a virus known as HCV(hepatitis C virus) .Infection with the hepatitis C virus can cause chronic liver disease and is the leading reason for liver transplant . HCV is spread by direct contact with an infected person’s blood, getting a tattoo or body piercing with non sterilized tools, sharing drug needles, sexual contact with infected person.

Treatments

An antiviral agent called interferon is prescribed by the doctors if hepatitis B persists.

Hepatitis C is cured with a combination of pegylated interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin.
